New Bills Must Include Comprehensive Action for Older Workers.

Source: TAEN 26.05.2010

Commenting on the announcement in the Queen’s Speech that the Government will introduce a Welfare Reform Bill and a Pensions and Savings Bill in this Parliament, TAEN – The Age and Employment Network is calling for the legislation to take a comprehensive approach to tackling unemployment among older people and creating a fairer labour market.

Chris Ball, Chief Executive of TAEN, says: “The Government has moved quickly to make significant changes to the welfare system and the announcement from Steve Webb, the new Pensions Minister, that the Government will scrap the default retirement age as soon as possible, is encouraging."

“However, older workers need a comprehensive programme of support to help them find and keep jobs. It is about much more than changing the regulations on retirement."

“Already we have 2.3 million people in the 50 to State Pension Age group, one in four of this group, who are economically inactive and need help to make a return to work a reality, not a distant dream. This includes dedicated support from Jobcentres, training and career development opportunities at work and, crucially, a shift in attitudes so that more employers see the over-50s as the dedicated, experienced and capable workers that we know they can be."

“Almost one-third of those over-50s in work are employed by the public sector and reports of thousands of imminent job losses make action by the Government all the more urgent. We need to ensure that more older workers are not forced out of the labour market into early retirement and reliance on the state or their savings to get by.”
