| UK survey shows one quarter of online audience over 50. | | | A survey of 45,000 people by UKOM, the UK online audience measurement service run by Nielsen, has shown that over 50s now account for the fastest growing group of web users in the UK.
According to the survey, 1 million new users in the over 50 category came online in the year to May, making the age group account for half of all new web users.
Over 50s now make up around 12 million of the 39 million people in the UK who regularly access the internet.
Saturation in younger demographics is not the only factor, according to Nielsen, who also cite increased confidence in online security and the growing number of websites targeting older users.
More companies are setting up specialist sites targeted at users over 50 in areas such as health, fashion, travel and cooking.
A spokesman for Nielsen said, "There are new sites such as those set up by Saga, or clothing sites for older women which are targeting this new audience. Travel companies such as those who organise coach and cruise holidays have also created an online presence which appeals to older consumers."
Older users are also flocking to Facebook, statistics show, primarily to keep in touch with other members of their family who are already on the social media site.
